Good Or Bad Credit, We Got Your Back
- The Janitor, Ed Stuck, is back and I think it's time I shared a little story with you I overheard upstairs by the red lockers.
- I was doing my bi-hourly sweep and I saw these kids talking. Naturally I asked for their hall pass but they just laughed at me. I hung my head in shame and continued to sweep. But what I heard them talking about is something I think I should share with ya'll. Here goes.
My credit card blunder: A story from high school
Cindy and Mary, let's call them, were talking in a locker bay about Cindy's new credit card. That's right, the girl had a credit card of her very own. It was a special moment. Her parents just got it for her for her eighteenth birthday and she was really excited. So excited that she went out last night to the mall and went on a little shopping spree swiping her card at every store she went to. She loved to power of plastic in her hand and the fact that she didn't really have to pay any money for the clothes she was buying. She got some great outfits by the way which she seemed more concerned about than her eminent debt.
Well it turns out that her parents never gave Cindy the credit card speech after giving her the gift. If they did they would have told her how high the rates are and that she will have to pay off whatever she buys plus interest, a concept Cindy just couldn't wrap her head around. Well when the bill game her dad was furious over the credit statement and had a a little chat with Cindy. Her punishment was to go to credit counseling. But most importantly she got to keep all the clothes. Even though she was now getting counseling for her poor spending habits, she at least had a fabulous wardrobe.
A credit lesson learned that was invaluable
Let this little story of girls who care more about clothes than credit be a little lesson to you all. If you don't understand how a credit card works, then I suggest you find out. It's no game and you aren't playing with fake money. You will have to pay back what you spend plus some. This is just another example of why kids shouldn't be able to have credit cards.
